On this day in music history…
In 1994, the second studio album by Stone Temple Pilots, titled Purple, debuted at number 1 on the albums chart. The album stayed in the top spot for three weeks, and it would spend a total of 64 weeks on the chart. By the end of the year, the RIAA had already certified Purple 3x Platinum, and that has since doubled to 6x Platinum. While Purple remains STP’s only chart-topping album, their next four studio albums would all chart in the top 10.
In 2023, Elton John played his final U.K. concert at the Glastonbury Festival, which took place at Worthy Farm in England. John performed on the Pyramid Stage, and a record-shattering 7.6 million people tuned in to watch the concert on the BBC. This made John the most-watched act in the festival’s history.
