On this day in music history…
In 1971, Jethro Tull played to a capacity crowd at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. About a thousand fans without tickets also showed up at the amphitheater, and they were redirected by police to an overflow area where they could still hear the music. Chaos broke out when some of the people charged at the police and began throwing rocks; the police responded with tear gas, which was carried into the open-air venue by the wind. As a result, rock concerts were banned at Red Rocks for five years, and Tull didn’t play there again till 17 years after the incident.
In 1975, The Eagles released their fourth studio album, titled One of These Nights. The album was a tremendous success. It was the first Eagles album to go to No. 1 on the chart, where it stayed for five weeks. The album’s second single, “Lyin’ Eyes,” went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus the following year. One of These Nights was the final Eagles album to feature original member Bernie Leadon, who parted ways with the band later that year.
