On this day in music history…

In 1967, Aretha Franklin topped the U.S. singles chart for the first time with “Respect,” the second single from her I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You album. The song also did well in the U.K., where it peaked at No. 10. “Respect” was written and originally recorded by Otis Redding, who had released his version a couple years earlier.

In 1972, Jethro Tull topped the U.S. albums chart for the first time with Thick as a Brick, their fifth studio album. The album had already been certified Gold by the RIAA about a week before it went to No. 1, where it would stay for two weeks. In Tull’s native U.K., the album peaked at No. 5. The group had already been at No. 1 in their home country in the past though—a few years before Thick as a Brick was released, their Stand Up album had topped the chart.
