On this day in music history…

In 1969, Crosby, Stills & Nash released their self-titled debut album. Each member of the trio had already seen success in other bands: David Crosby in The Byrds, Stephen Stills in Buffalo Springfield, and Graham Nash in The Hollies. The album went on to chart at No. 6, and both of its singles, “Marrakesh Express” and “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” were Top 40 hits. Crosby, Stills & Nash won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist the following year.

In 1984, Tina Turner released her fifth solo album, titled Private Dancer. The album marked a big comeback for Turner. Her first four solo albums had sold poorly, and Capitol Records wasn’t particularly supportive of signing her; her signing was the doing of A&R man John Carter, who also oversaw the making of Private Dancer. The album ended up peaking at No. 3 on the chart and produced five hit singles, including the chart-topper “What’s Love Got to Do with It.”
