On this day in music history…
–In 1966, The Beach Boys released their 11th studio album, titled Pet Sounds. In addition to writing or co-writing nearly all of the songs on the record, Brian Wilson was also the arranger and producer. Pet Sounds would go on to be the band’s eighth top 10 album, peaking at number 10 on the chart. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest albums of all time.
— In 1974, The Beach Boys performed to a crowd of 5,400 people at SIU Arena in Carbondale. The group’s lineup included Carl Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, and Dennis Wilson. Brian Wilson, although still a band member, had stopped touring 10 years earlier. The Beach Boys opened with “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” and proceeded to play numerous classics from their catalog along with a few newer songs from their Holland album, which had been put out the previous year. They finished the night with two encores, wrapping up their hour-and-45-minute show with “Fun, Fun, Fun.” Former Sha Na Na guitarist Henry Gross was the opening act. The Beach Boys would return to perform at SIU Arena again five years later.
