SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WJPF) – The former treasurer of the Illinois State Police Heritage Fund has pleaded guilty to wire fraud in connection to a scheme that prosecutors say cost the charity tens of thousands of dollars.

LeAnn Shirley, 57, admitted that in 2019 she improperly transferred $79,000 out of a Heritage Fund account into an out of state bank account. All but $5,000 was then transferred into a crypto-currency account.

LeAnn Shirley could face up to 20 years behind bars and have to pay up to 250-thousand dollars in fines.

The Illinois State Police Heritage Foundation is classified by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) committed to preserving the history of the Illinois State Police.
