Small earthquake detected Tuesday near Pinckneyville

PERRY COUNTY, Ill. (WJPF) – A small earthquake rattled Perry County Tuesday.

The U.S. Geological Survey says it happened at 10:34 a.m. and was centered about 3 miles east of Pinckneyville. Originally rated as 3 on the Richter Scale, the quake was later downgraded to a 2.5.

No damage was reported. Earthquakes registering less than a 3 on the Richter Scale are usually not able to be felt by humans.
