Carbondale native and Saluki Hall of Famer Derek Shelton received a contract extension from the Pittsburgh Pirates over the weekend.  The Pirates, who are managed by Shelton, are 16-7 this season.

Shelton’s initial deal was set to expire after the season and he entered the season with a 142-242 record but the hot start convinced management to keep the former Saluki as the team’s lead decision maker.

Shelton entered the Saluki Hall of Fame last year as part of the class of 2022.

Details of Shelton’s new deal were not disclosed.
