CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) – A man who Carbondale Police say accosted two women on city sidewalks is now behind bars.

Ryan Steinman, 38, of Hurst, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery and disorderly conduct.

Carbondale Police say around 1:00 a.m. Thursday they were called to the intersection of South Washington and East Walnut Streets after reports of a woman screaming. Police say Steinman approached the woman, at first wanting a hug. When she refused and began to walk away, Steinman began yelling insults. The woman tried to call 9-1-1, but police say Steinman tried to take her phone out of her hands. The woman eventually used pepper spray to disable the 38-year-old until police arrived and took him to jail.

Carbondale Police say on the afternoon of March 9, Steinman grabbed a woman by the waist as she was walking near South Illinois and Grand Avenues. She was not hurt.
