Lawsuit: Paraplegic inmate denied shower for five months

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A federal lawsuit contends that St. Louis jail inmate hasn’t been able to shower for more than five months because the facility’s showers aren’t able to accommodate people in wheelchairs.

The lawsuit that advocacy groups filed Tuesday on behalf of 39-year-old inmate Anthony Tillman says Tillman was given a wash basin and rag but is unable to use them to fully clean himself because of his physical limitations. The suit says this violates the Americans with Disabilities Act and seeks a court order requiring the St. Louis City Justice Center to provide access to a shower that accommodates Tillman’s disability.

The lockup has had three inmate uprisings since December.
