Illinois man accused of taking part in U.S. Capitol riot arrested in Marion

MARION, Ill. (WJPF) —  A man accused of taking part in the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol has been arrested in Marion.

Mathew Caspel, who also goes by the name Mateo Q Caspel, was taken into custody on Tuesday.  He’s charged with knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted area and resisting law enforcement.

Federal authorities say Caspel, 27, was arrested after a former neighbor and a social media friend both identified him from a video taken during the riot. Caspel was identified in part by a tattoo on his face.

Caspel is scheduled to appear before a judge via video conference Friday morning.
