Carbondale traffic stop leads to arrest on gun charges

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) — A traffic stop in Carbondale led to the arrest Saturday of a Marion man on gun charges.

At about 8:15 p.m., Carbondale Police pulled over a vehicle in the 500 block of West Main Street for an equipment violation.

During the traffic stop, officers learned that the passenger in the car, 26-year-old Keenan Parson of Marion, had an outstanding warrant out of Union County. Parson was taken into custody for that warrant.

A subsequent search of the car turned up a small amount of raw, illegal cannabis in the vehicle and a stolen handgun under Parson’s seat. Parson was then additionally charged with possession of a stolen firearm and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

The driver of the car, 23-year-old Jaylyn Williams of Du Quoin, was issued a civil citation for possession of cannabis and released.
